Hi,
I just completed reading Valmiki syndrome! Loved it!
I’m still big on buying books.. as opposed to e-books!
I was hoping to buy the Krishna series once it was complete! I still cant figure if it has been released yet, since, the site does not allow me to access the news page. But, after going through the page here, I realize that all your books may not be avialable as print editions!
Are all the books of the KC series in print?
Thanks
Hi Venkat,
Thank you! I’m so pleased that so many readers have liked The Valmiki Syndrome as it’s the first of a series of non-fiction books I’ve been working as an addendum to my series. (Valmiki Syndrome is of course an adjunct to my Ramayana Series.) I’m sure you’ll enjoy the other books in this series even more as I learned a great deal in the process of writing it.
Just FYI, the ebook edition of The Valmiki Syndrome has several chapters and passages that are not in the print edition. The ebook editions are always the definitive uncut editions, since they are the only ones I have control over and a direct say in on every aspect, including the covers.
I love print books too but it’s not really up to the author. To give you an example, the manuscript of The Valmiki Syndrome lay approved with the publisher for almost four years before being released finally.
In the case of the KC Series, only five books are in print but at least HarperCollins is doing its best to release the rest at the earliest. Alongwith Westland, my other publishers, they do their best to bridge the ebook-print book gap. But in other cases, the gap only seems to widen. You should look at this link for more info: http://www.akbebooks.com/about/about-akb-ebooks/
In the end, even the original tales of our puranas were all verbally passed on using the Sanskrit sandhi shloka, which happens to be iambic meter or the equivalent of our modern digital binary code. So in a sense, all our epics and puranas and Vedas were composed and passed on from age to age in a ‘digital’ form! How apt then that ebooks happen to use the same binary code.
Wishing you a Happy Reading 2013!
Ashok
Dear Ashok,
A very happy new year to you.
I really admire your writings – specially Ramayana series and Mahabharta.
Really wish you release Mahabharta series faster.
I have paperback editions of Ramayana series & 3 krishna croilis
Somehow I enjoy reading books in its actual form and not ebooks.
Where can I get rest of KS books from as I dont really want to read ebooks.
Have you stopped releasing your writings in book form ? Please confirm.
rggs / Saleena Sharma
Dear Saleena,
A rocking ’13 to you as well! Thanks for your kind words.
I would be happy to see all my work released in print form. If you are willing to wait a few more years, or even a decade or two, then certainly, yes, you will be able to get them all. But not all my work is accepted for publication in print editions and often, they don’t stay in print. Like all authors, I don’t control these things, publishers do. I offer ALL my work for publication, but less than half my books are accepted for publication and even those take between three and 12 years to eventually appear in print.
Your question is answered at length at this link: http://www.akbebooks.com/about/about-akb-ebooks/
All the best.
Ashok
Your books are a delight as always.
Ever since Prince of Ayodhya I have been smitten… and that was 7 years ago.
As a mark of my respect I have a separate shelf dedicated to your books.
I call it the Bankers Bank of Books or the Bankers Shrine.
I would like to have a chat with you someday.
Do keep writing and help me create my own library.

Dear Raj,
Thank you for your very kind words. I’m honored to be on the Bank or Shrine as you call it! Hope I’m worthy!
You are in fact chatting with me right now, or as close to it as will ever be possible. I’ve done a few live chats on IBN Live but apart from that, am not an author who believes in personal promotion. I think a writer’s work should speak for himself. Your dialogue with my books is the most fulfilling chat possible.
Happy Reading 2013!
Ashok
Dear Ashok,
Hello!!!!
Whatever happened to the FB Group?? Where’s everybody? Missing all those insanely funny times; your statuses, comments and the comments of all those amazing people on the group.
Nevertheless, been seriously out of touch from Ashok’s Universe. But am back, thankfully.
Currently reading The Valmiki Syndrome. Just finished Murder and Champagne. Wow, man!! What a read! Maza aa gaya! It would make an amazing movie.
Anyways,
You seem to be very busy with the other books in the pipeline. Just wanted to say that I can wait for as long as it takes. You are doing a splendid job.
Cheers,
Jitendra.
Dear Jitendra,
Look on the bright side though: I am focussed solely on writing books.
Glad you liked M&C. It’s an oldie that I wrote in three days. Including meals and life as usual, so I guess it was probably just about 25 to 30 hours at the most, no plotting, no planning. Fun writing like that too for a change! Should try it again.
Thanks for the support and for the continued encouragement. It really makes a big difference. Here’s wishing you Happy Reading 2013!
Ashok
Hi Ashok,
Just read your letter on the website regarding the subscriptions. I just wanted to tell you that irrespective of the delays I love your work and must again confess that you write faster than I can read.
” Also I am getting these books much before the print editions, which is a treat in itself.
I do have to say that I am a bit disappointed as I planned to finish KC in 2012 itself but then as they say in Hindi “Sahaj pake so meetha hoye.
I also lent out my RS print editions to a few friends who loved it and my POA is now a lovable book with a broken spine. (I do wish to get your autograph on it someday).
Wishing you an EPIC 2013,
Ribhu
P.S. could you please include debit cards as payment option for the website subscription as being a student I don’t have a credit card. (my current subscription was paid by dad’s card)
Hi Ribhu,
Thank you for your kind words! That kind of unconditional support is really what keeps me writing.
The fact that you appreciate how fast these ebooks are actually coming out (rather than focussing on the delays and occasional lapses) itself proves how great a supporter and reader you are. Please keep that positive attitude and keep up your support.
You can have my support on the PoA copy anyday.
The website does accept debit cards but only international ones as the Indian Government / RBI has restricted use of local debit cards for making international payments – so there’s nothing I or any local website can do to change that, sorry!
Wishing you also a very epic year ahead and Happy Reading 2013!
Ashok
Dear Mr Banker
I am a huge fan of your krishna coriolis series and have been awaiting for book 7 riders of garuda. On the website it says that it will be released by the end of this year. As it is 28th of december, i have only one question to ask you ” WHEN IS THE BOOK COMING?”. I am constantly checking everywhere for any sort of update on the ebooks releasing but cannot find any answers.
Dear Abhishek,
Thank you for your query – please refer to the following link: http://www.akbebooks.com/news/
I’d also request that you direct all queries or feedback regarding AKB eBOOKS (including delivery dates and schedules) to the support email, rather than post it here. Thanks and wish you Happy Reading 2013!
Best
Ashok
Hi Ashok,
I have been searching for Vertigo for a very long time. I see that it is listed here http://www.abebooks.com/Vertigo-Ashok-K-Banker-Penguin-New/2960249404/bd finally. It seems to cater to people outside India. Is there one for people within India (maybe I am not searching enough?)
Also, I see Sons of Sita is available and Seeds of War is out too. Is there a place to opt for updates on your book releases? Earlier I used to get updates through facebook (I liked your page). I do not get any updates now.
Anush
Hi Anush,
Vertigo has never been published outside India. The edition you’ve linked to is the 2005 Indian edition (there was an earlier 1993 Indian edition). Both editions are out of print. The book is currently unavailable anywhere except as an ebook.
Most of my work is available only in ebook form and the print editions often take publishers years (even decades) to eventually bring out. You can keep in touch with all my new and upcoming works through my ebookstore http://www.akbebooks.com – but if you’re hoping for print editions of them all, I wish I could say they’re all available but not even a third of them are in print at any given time. Hence the ebooks! If nothing else, you can always be in touch with my latest works through AKB eBOOKS. Happy Reading!
Ashok
Hi Ashok,
I am having a fantastic time reading your Ramayana Series. Good Job on writing a new interpretation of the epic.
I wanted to know which fictional writers do you love to read?
Regards,
Amit Mishra.
Hi Amit,
Thank you for the kind words! It’s so good of you to take the time to write and say so.
Fiction writers? My friend, I read anywhere from 40 to 50 books a month. I could list my top 100 but not less than that. I can tell you though that I dislike mythology, fantasy and rarely read historical fiction. My favorite genres are literary fiction, crime thrillers, horror fiction and romance. Currently I’m working my way through the brilliant Jack Irish crime series of Australian author Peter Temple and assorted romance novels.
I also read a lot of non-fiction related to LTGB and racism issues as I feel strongly about such matters. And I watch only recorded (or on DVD/Blu-Ray) TV and movies mostly American, Asian or European, never any Indian live television (not even news), no exceptions.
Wish you much Happy Reading!
Ashok
hi,
once again a new thread alert ! i keep on writing to you responses in my head but they were get written on any paper or monitor.
I hope you are doing good. Did you enjoy the concert of GnR. I saw pics of the celebrities and they all seemed ready to hit a party rather than a concert.
Well, that said..I have not yet started reading “sons of sita”, I took a small detour and started reading-”woman in black” & “strange and sublime address”
So hopefully with the start of the new year- i will read the ramayana series and gods of war.
And i had no idea about this publishers politics, how can they do that ? I wish you could take a legal stand and fight against it. Aren’t the publishers then just minting money out of your books.
Yes, its pretty ironical to know that given errr..your “hindu” name you didnt have any exposure to hinduism.
I just want to say thank you,for mailing me the copy of “Vertigo” and i have also given my hard copy to my colleague..Lol i am actually bullying everyone to read “vertigo”.
Here is wishing you and your family a very happy christmas and a prosperous new year. Here is to a second wish, may you write best sellers and keep on communicating with your readers (insert my name )
Happy holidays !!
PS :- do let me know which books are you currently reading ? have you read any book by Karl Ove Knausgaard ?
PS :- i so much miss bombay christmas. Please do have a huge chunk of guava jelly and kul kul on my behalf.
Hi Shweta,
It’s good you put the responses down on the Readerswrite Page, I sometimes have difficulty reading people’s thoughts! Lol.
We enjoyed GNR (my wife is the real fan) and yes, we were in the VIP section with all those celebs but kept to ourselves – I stay very far away from the celeb/star scene, to the extent that when I receive invitations, even from the biggest and most prestigious names, I simply return them immediately, alongwith the gift (which is often quite expensive), sending a silent but clear message: ‘Not interested!’ I sometimes joke that I should put a sign outside my door which reads: ‘Dogs welcome. Bollywood and celebs F-O!’ That sums up my attitude.
Guava jelly? Man, I love it. And kulkuls and the rest too. Haven’t had them for ages but you make me want to go to MacRonald’s and get some – all my remaining Christian relatives are scattered around the world.
Let’s not even talk about publisher politics. ‘Tis the season to be jelly! I’m fortunate to now have some excellent publishers, both in business and personal terms – HarperCollins and Westland are brilliant. And of course, my ebooks venture is really doing well, touch wood.
Please don’t bully people into reading anything. Lol! I believe a book finds its readers over time. If it has to, it will find them eventually. It’s as much their luck as the book’s.
Woman in Black is wonderful – the film adaptation is great too. I’m a huge supernatural/horror/dark tales fan. I read too much to list any one book – am currently burning through 2 to 3 books daily, often more. Right now on my Kindle Paperwhite (a Christmas present from my son, just home from LA for the holidays) are a bunch of Jack Irish novels by Peter Temple. Excellent dense writing and great detective novels. Much else.
Not read Karl Ove Knausgaard – you’ve done it again! Thanks!
Have a great Christmas anyway. Bombay is where the heart is. Keep in touch, write anytime and as often as you wish. You are always welcome here.
Ashok
hi,
Hope you had a merry christmas ! I also hope that you had guava jelly and kul kul, because Bombay Christmas is so incomplete without these things.
I am glad you’ve found excellent publishers. Btw, Vertigo is being shown out of stock again and i guess i am the lucky reader to own it : ) How cool is that !!
Did i say that i bully people into reading “vertigo”.No i just suggest, them to read that book and lend my copy : ) And you are right a book chooses its readers. But Vertigo needs to be read by everyone.
And please don’t stay away from Bollywood wale. Are they so bad ? i hope Shriram Raghvan or dibankar Banerjee would make a movie out of “Vertigo” (& cast me as Meera )
I hope you have checked out Karl Knausgaard. Norwegian and indian authors are the flavours of the season.
Just 2 last questions :-
1. which Kindle do you use ?
2. Have you read any work by Joseph Mitchell & Michael Dirda.
Wishing you and your family a very happy new year.
PS :- do listen to this song-”where do you go to my lovely” By Peter Sardsedt
Hi Shweta,
Yes a very Merry Stressmass. I mean Christmas! Lol. Definitely had guava jelly, kul kuls, plum cake and turkey! No naoris because am not as fond of them. Missed marzipans but that’s more of an Easter sweet anyway. I come from a family where the Roast Turkey with stuffing and Cranberry Sauce and glazing were a must for this time of year so that’s the only thing absent – can’t finish a whole roast Turkey on my own and nobody else is that much into it. But it’s all good.
Yes, you’re a lucky one to have a copy of Vertigo. You sound like my 20-year old daughter who also thinks everyone her age should read Vertigo and Vortal, her two favorite books by me. (Vortal is ebook only till now, so don’t even search for it, but it is finally being published in print in late 2013.)
Oh yes, Bollywood is awful. I get what you mean about the ‘alternate directors’ but frankly even they’re not really that great. Lol to the Meera casting! Vertigo has actually been optioned twice before but didn’t get made. I’m quite happy if it (and all my other books) never get filmed – I actively discourage all filmmakers, Bollywood or otherwise from coming even within shouting distance, short of putting up the sign that says “Dogs Welcome, Bollywood F.O.” outside my front door. The sign isn’t necessary because no Bollywood pro would dare come even that close! Lol. Seriously though, I don’t encourage film adaptations and don’t give a damn about the money or stars so they have nothing to tempt me with! That’s not because I don’t like films but because I like them too much – I’m a HUGE film buff. I watch an average of 500 to 1000 films a year, and have easily crossed 20,000 films watched in my lifetime so far. Also, my son is a budding film producer based in LA and when I say no film adaptations, that extends to him as well: he is quite capable of creating his own films, as is any good film director or producer. So I speak from inside knowledge and integrity. Books are books for a reason. If I want to make a film, I’ll DIY someday. I have a great script based in New Zealand I’d like to make myself someday, with my own money – but it’s got nothing to do with India or anything Indian.
I prefer the small basic Kindle as I already have two iPads. I have the old Kindle 6″ and now have the new Kindle Paperwhite 6″ too which is amazing.
I’ve read everything by Joseph Mitchell starting with Up In The Old Hotel and nothing by Michael Dirda (though of course I’m aware of his work).
I grew up listening to that song when I was a kid. It was a huge hit around the time I was still in knickers – 1966? 1967? I think it topped around that time. Remains an all-time favorite even though it’s more my mom’s generation than mine. She used to say it was meant to be about Sophia Lauren, or someone like her from Napoli (Naples). I once wrote an entire film script inspired by that song for a friend of mine – Abhishek Kapoor (Gattu) the dude who made Rock On! He didn’t get it because he didn’t get the song itself. How apt that you (and I) do!
Connections – always connections. Strange yet non-fictional!
Have a Rocking 13.
Ashok
Hi Ashok,
I was wondering, since you are quite used to doing unprecedented stuff for as an author with such a huge and dedicated fan base, wouldn’t it be a good idea for you to offer lifetime subscription (if something like that is even possible) instead of just 1 year subscriptions?
I am sure there’ll be many who would jump at such an opportunity instantly because as far as I know people who read your stuff, read just about everything you write, be it epic fiction, murder mysteries, non fiction, sci-fi.
I just finished the 6th book in the KC series yesterday evening after a week long marathon session. Now, after reading your works in a various genres I don’t think you can put a foot wrong as far as writing goes, regardless of what you choose to write.
Although I think Ramayana is still your best, but that is due to a personal bias .Rest everything is just as good as everything else you have written so far. I haven’t been disappointed even once.
Although It will be a long time coming but the books that I am waiting for most eagerly now are the MBA books that contain the Bhagwad Gita and the series (if it will be a series) on Buddha’s life.
I was lucky enough to become a first reader by subscribing to MBA, Ramayana and KC series as soon as they became available and I’ll be more than happy to subscribe for a lifetime if that option ever became available.
Hope you give this some consideration,
Peace
Eshan
Hi Eshan,
First of all, thank you for being such an awesome reader and supporter and for continuing that support through the years. I’m happy I was able to meet you in Delhi when you came for my launch in 2010! It’s readers like you who have made it possible for me to keep writing, quite honestly.
Yes, the requests for Lifetime Subscriptions are increasing steadily, especially from existing AKB eBOOKS Subscribers. To be honest, I wanted to be sure the website was fully functional before deciding the next subscription offers. I’m definitely taking lifetime subscriptions into consideration but having said that, I should add that I don’t know if it’s practical to make such a longterm commitment. For one thing, I’ll be done with the EI Library (including revisions, new editions, extras, etc, by the end of 2015, which is three years from now. It’s now running to just over 100 books in total. So that concludes my lifetime writing plan to retell ALL the major legends, myths, itihasa and historical highlights of the Indian sub-continent.
After that, from February 2016 onwards, I’ll be working on completely new projects. Things I haven’t even talked about to anyone yet (but have been working on, slowly and steadily, because it takes me decades to rev up the engine before I can start work on something). Books are among those new projects.
In my opinion, those books that I will write then, in 2016 and thereafter, will be my best work yet. Just my opinion, mind you. Only time will tell for sure. But I believe in the end, I’ll be best known for those books and they will be the ones you and any other reader of my work (as well as those who have never read my work yet) will appreciate and enjoy the most. As I mentioned, there will be other projects in other media, but those books are the ones I’ve worked my way up towards my entire life. They are the best work I am capable of doing in this lifetime and everything until then, including my Mba, Kali Rising and other ‘prestige’ projects are just prep and homework!
Enough said about that! When the time comes, I’ll hopefully prove it with the actual work and it will speak for itself.
The only reason I mentioned those works is because you talked about a lifetime subscription – when I’ll be offering subscribers here over 100 books by the fourth year of the website, and who knows, I could well go on to write another dozen or more books in my lifetime even after the EI Library ends. (I’m 48 now and will be 51 when I finish the EI Library and start my new projects.) So even I can’t say how many more books I’ll write or what kind of books they might be – or even if they will all be books! Without a crystal ball, I can’t predict what I could offer subscribers for that Lifetime subscription – or figure out how much to charge them, keeping in mind so many factors in the future – and so I doubt that will ever be offered.
Most of all, it’s so hard to put a money value on unwritten work years in advance, especially in a field like ebooks which has yet to reach a maturity in terms of pricing, marketing, inputs, etc.
But the thought is a hugely flattering one and thanks for that!
Happy Reading!
Ashok
Hi Ashok,
Thanks for the prompt reply (as always). I can understand the difficulty in offering a lifetime subscription. The idea just popped into my head so though I should share it with you.
Anyway since something like this is not likely to happen can you please suggest as to whether I should buy the subscription for the next year right now or not? Because as far as I remember my First Reader subscription will last till 31st of March, 2013. After that I’ll be able to get only the particular series I had subscribed to originally i.e. MBA, KC and Ramayana. However, it’s mentioned on the website that the price for yearly subscription will increase after 31st December.
So, if you can guide me in the right direction I would really appreciate it.
In Thanking you I remain,
Peace
Eshan
Hi Eshan,
As a First Reader + Mba Series Subscriber, you remain a member of AKB eBOOKS for life, even after all the three series end. You don’t need to pay another penny. As and when there is additional material which was not intended to be part of the original subscription ebooks + free ebooks, you will be given a heavy discount option to subscribe to that as well. (This includes ebooks by other authors, anthologies, etc.)
So right now, just sit pretty and enjoy reading what’s on.
Ashok
Thank you very much Ashok.
This is very kind of you. I really appreciate it.This is definitely the best investment I have ever made.
I can only pray that you continue to write for a very long time to come and that you write even more than you plan to.
God Bless you,
Peace,
Eshan
Holiday Planning on my part…..
Hi Ashok,
Was wondering, actually hoping that maybe, just maybe KC 7 will be released on or b4 x-mas eve?
i cannot think of a better way to spend christmas than poring over Rider of Garuda…..
thanks
Anand
Hi Anand,
Trying hard, my man! The thing is, the new system I set up involves each month’s releases getting through the workflow together – so once KC7 is finalized for uploading, KC8 and Mba3 and Kali3 will be ready almost immediately after.
But I hear you! Other readers are asking much the same thing so will see what I can do, maybe pull KC7 and Kali3 up ahead and the other two a week later.
Ashok
Hi Ashok,
Would be fantastic if you are able to pull it off. Just saw Santa at the local mall – think am gonna bump some anxious kids off the line to get my x-mas wish into the tally!
thanks
Anand
Lol.
Couldn’t hurt to try that. Better yet, try Ebook Santa. He’s this dark-skinned dude who wears all black leather, sunglasses even at night, rides a big mean hog, and tosses ebook devices through windows at readers who have been really really good all year. I’ll even put in a good word fer ya!
Ashok
So…..did Santa crash thro’ the chimney????
Hey Ashok,
just following up on our earlier chat……am still keeping my hopes up……any chance KC 7 gets done today?
Anand
Lol.
Check this out: http://www.akbebooks.com/subscribe/krishna-coriolis-series/kc7-rider-of-garuda/
Not in time for Christmas, but definitely in time for New Year’s.
Ashok
Thanks for trying and for my 2 nanoseconds of anonymous fame….enjoyed reading my name on the site!
Have a luvly x-mas and look forward to the 31st.
Anand
p.s: am firing the mall santa!
Dear Ashok
A lot of us here at IIM Udaipur’s Literary Society, ‘Potpourri’ are huge fans of your Ramayana series and in fact have often actively evangelized it to the wider student community here. Hence, we feel that you are the perfect person to approach for a unique gathering of Indian myth and fantasy authors that we are planning to hold in the month of February.
IIM Udaipur is the youngest of the new IIMs and since our inception it has been our constant endeavor to carry out activities that differentiate ourselves from others. With this in mind, the IIMU Literary Society has planned a gathering of Indian myth and fantasy authors in the month of February. We are looking to hold a panel discussion on a related topic consisting of 4-6 authors and would very much like to have you esteemed presence as part of the discussion.
Thus, if you could convey to us dates in the month of February during which it would be possible for you to make time out for such an event, we could move ahead and try to fix a date that will be comfortable to both you as well as the other authors. Currently we have narrowed down the event window to either the first or the third weekend in February.
Needless to say, your travel and stay arrangements in the beautiful City of Lakes will be courtesy IIMU’s renowned hospitality team.
Looking forward to a positive response from you.
As always, fans of your work.
Team Potpourri
Dear Team Potpourri,
Thank you for the very kind words! Your Potpourri literary society sounds quite fascinating and interesting. I’m truly honored by your support and for the kind invitation. However, I’m unable to attend. I’m sure it will be an interesting discussion and wish you all the best with it!
Warm regards
Ashok
Read ” ABOUT ASHOK – a longer bio ” ….. something similar to Jayesh Mehta in VERTIGO. Am I wrong. Please delete this post if you this is transgression
Sharath,
You are quite right, there are many similarities between Jay’s life and mine. This is very widely written about and covered by the media – I was even featured on several magazine covers early in my career as a novelist (back in the early 1990s) due to my traumatic background. Of course, Jay is only a partial representation of one short period of my life, not the entirety. The larger picture is one that is too difficult for me to write about – and I’m not interested in peddling the ‘Shantaram’ kind of pity tourism that other authors thrive on.
Ashok
Can’t believe that I’ve read Vertigo NOW… Apologize if I’ve lingered near any raw nerve.. I can never have talk in a public forum , Kudos..
Waiting for KC-#7& #8, KALI series # 3 and MBA #3.. before December (Your Promise). I have been reading Ramayana series to my daughter… shes loving it.
Sharath, all the nerves involved are well-cooked, not raw. Lol. Have talked about this publicly and openly many many times over the years. Yes, all the four titles you list will be available before month-end for sure. Am personally overseeing it. They will all be released literally in the last few days of the month (it’s already 17th today) but they will be on the website, count on it.
Ashok
Dear Ashok
I have started your Ramayana series on recommendation of my brother, who has read the entire series, to efficiently utilize my time in the Metro on my way to work.
I get so engrossed reading the book that i miss my station many times and have to come back from the stations ahead, what more can i say.
Dear Aditi,
Three things:
1. Thank you for the kind words.
2. Your brother has awesome taste. Five him for me. Dude, read on!
3. You’re not the first reader who misses Metro stations while reading my work, apparently. The most famous being a London Metro user who is a longtime fan and now e-friend. What can I say? Read on through to the other side.
Ashok
